Kindness Chain10 January 2024

One gift sparked a chain of 47 acts across Melbourne

On International Day of Kindness, a give.au member left a beautifully wrapped gift on a park bench in Carlton. Inside was a small journal, a pen, and a note that read: "This is for you. Fill it with good things. Pass it on when it's full."

We tracked what happened next.

The journal passed through 47 hands over 8 months. A barista in Fitzroy. A student in St Kilda. A nurse in Footscray. Each entry more moving than the last.

The final entry, written by a man who'd received the journal at his lowest point, read: "I didn't think strangers could care. Now I know they can."

The journal now lives in our archives. It is the most important document we own.
